《美國文學教程》旨在引導教師和學生全面系統(tǒng)地了解和研究美國文學的發(fā)展歷程，探究美國社會思潮以及文化脈絡，學習和理解各個時期的作家及其作品，提高文學修養(yǎng)，增添文學興趣，提高英語語言能力、理解能力和欣賞水平。
本教程將美國文學按歷史發(fā)展的階段分成四個部分：殖民地和建國時期文學；浪漫主義時期文學；現(xiàn)實主義時期文學；現(xiàn)代主義文學。本教程共八個章節(jié)，集中介紹了43位美國著名的文學家和他們的優(yōu)秀作品。全書以英文為主。每個章節(jié)均有歷史背景介紹、作家生平簡介、代表作品選讀、選篇注釋和賞析思考題。并附錄有：美國文學編年表、文學術(shù)語闡述、思考題參考答案和四套綜合練習題集。
本教程最大的特色是：現(xiàn)代主義時期的文學所占篇幅較大，涉及的作家和作品較多；附錄材料較豐富，尤其是編寫的綜合練習題集，便于教師和學生檢測學習效果；賞析思考題有針對性；教材適應面寬，可以作為高等學校英語專業(yè)本科生的教材及參考書，研究生輔助讀本，亦可作為非英語專業(yè)的大學生的文學課外讀物以及廣大文學愛好者的賞析讀本。為了便于教師課堂教學和學生自主學習，我們還將該教程電子課件制作成了光盤。
