But there is still another class of news which involves proces-ses of a single event which may or may not arrive at completion. The news in this class records successive stages of a progressiveevent, in which every occurrence and all occurrences from day today, however important in themselves, are but parts of thewhole, steps of a continuing process. An election, for example,is an event which completes a long process of developing events inthe course of the campaign, all contributing to a single result andnever separated from the end to be reached. A political or socialreform movement furnishes news of the same nature, continuousand inseparable, which progresses, or endeavors to progress, toa desired end. A session of congress produces news of a proces-sional nature in which there are many continuing currents of e-vents, currents which may attain completion in achievement orwhich may disappear in the sands, but which in the process pres-ent varied aspects and varied appeals to public interest.
Much news, therefore, and, as a rule, the more importantnews, is of a serial character, carrying many continued stories offact, each report a new chapter, each incident a link in a chain.Whether long stories or short they have the attraction of continui-ty, of expectation, often of surprise, promoting and sustaininginterest in the degree in which they touch human emotion andconcern. Each edition of a newspaper is a new creation. And each day's creation is different from that of any other day.
