《21世紀英語專業(yè)系列教材·普通高等教育“十二五”規(guī)劃教材：與西方文化》不僅是宗教文本，也是西方文明的一大淵源和基石，它以顯性或隱性的方式存在于幾千年西方文學、藝術、文化、政治和意識形態(tài)中，其重要性在我國改革開放后便逐漸得到了共識。除了從宗教、歷史和《圣經(jīng)》與文學、藝術的關系開展學術研究，發(fā)表文章和專著外，20世紀90年代中期我國高等院校同歐美高校一樣，也開始設立了《圣經(jīng)》課程，這是有深遠意義的舉措。歐美高等院校自上個世紀80年代開始普遍開設《圣經(jīng)》的文學、文化闡釋課程，其目的是為了挽救這部經(jīng)典在年輕一代人中間逐漸失去的影響，因為不熟悉《圣經(jīng)》他們就不可能理解從喬叟到喬伊斯的整個西方文學作品和藝術，就意味著西方文明傳統(tǒng)將在未來年月喪失殆盡。一句話，開設《21世紀英語專業(yè)系列教材·普通高等教育“十二五”規(guī)劃教材：與西方文化》闡釋課程對歐美國家來說是維護傳統(tǒng)的大事。我國開設相關課程的目的自然不同，但也是當務之急，因為以新興大國出現(xiàn)在世界舞臺上的中國必須真正了解西方的思維邏輯、行事準則與方式。要達此目的，我國民眾，特別是高校學生就必須熟悉《圣經(jīng)》。當然，不同于歐美類似課程，我們主要是普及性的任務，授課程度比他們淺顯得多。
